Runaway-Truck Ramps Explained
There you are, driving your rig down a mountain pass—loaded to the legal max of 80,000 pounds—grooving to Little Feat’s “Willin’.” Suddenly, you notice your speed getting away from you, but you can’t downshift your nonsynchro tranny. You hit the brakes, but they’re fading. They, like 95 percent of all heavy-truck brakes, are drums. You’re in trouble.
What saves the bacon you’re hauling is an exit to the right: a gravel-covered off-ramp that leads up a rise or hill, eliminating the need for brakes. Six (eternal) seconds later, you are almost stopped. and glad you wore your brown pants.
Here’s what you need to know about runaway ramps, even if you don’t drive a big rig:
• Also called “truck escape ramps”—or in Britain, “escape bays”—they rely on the additional friction created by gravel or sand and, usually, the gravitational slow-down effect of an incline to stop runaway vehicles. Aircraft-carrier-type arresting cables with netting have been used in lieu of ramps, but they require more maintenance.
• While no one seems to know when or where the ramps first appeared, the consensus is some time in the mid-’60s, appropriately, in mountainous regions.
• By 1990, there were reportedly 170 runaway ramps in 27 (mostly western) states. Current data is scarce, but a 1981 NHTSA study notes there had been 2450 runaway-truck incidents that year, with 2150 of those involving the use of ramps.
• If properly built, runaway ramps can get the stopping job done. If not, well . . . search YouTube for “runaway truck ramp,” and watch the “freak truck accident” video.
• Ramps vary in design, materials, construction, and effectiveness. For example, if the rig in this story’s intro had been going 60 mph, the ramp would have provided nearly 3000 retarding horsepower.
• States determine where ramps are constructed, based on such parameters as: runaway-truck accident rate at a candidate grade; length and percent of slope; traffic volume and percent of heavy-truck traffic; and conditions at the grade’s end, e.g., a sharp bend, a building, etc.
• “Runaway Trucks in Pennsylvania” (Carrier and Pachuta, SAE Technical Paper No. 811262) details the summer 1980 construction of a Pittsburgh-area ramp, which cost $600,000 (about $1.2 million in today’s dollars). Nearly 40 percent of that money went toward a retaining wall, which, depending on topography, is not always necessary.
• Upon driving a loaded dump truck onto the Pennsylvania ramp at 35 mph, the authors of the SAE study describe the stopping inertia as “strong but absent the jarring impact of other crashes.” Vehicle damage was confined to lower engine accessories and air tanks.

- Instead of using gravel to slow down the truck, UDOT uses wire nets across the whole truck ramp.

slow down before town
This is silly, 5 mill? Then all that still would have to be maintained, esp after a truck uses it, with gravel just re grade it after it’s used.. hardly any maintenance, less moving parts s ect..not to mention the damage to the truck, should be thinking of ways to not distroy the trucks and still make it safe..o wait we did.. GRAVEL
How much to restore it each time it’s used? Alot more than it costs to rake some gravel.
How about trucks bypass your city — it turns into ghost town. If you don’t have a CDL, & the skill to make that turn in a truck, STFU.
This is a joke after I almost crashed 15 years ago in the same spot someone had taken down the signs, give ample warning when coming off that mountain grade the road comes to a «T» at the end.
Glad to hear they added the runaway ramp to save the town.
Simply «SLOW THE FUCK DOWN»
Rand Paul is going to love this one. Another five million just flushed down the toilet. The first truck to go in there is going to be totaled. Hopefully the driver will make it out okay, this looks like a death trap though. Should have just stuck to good ol fashioned gravel.
Ummmmmmmmmmmmm okayyyyyyyyy.
Unzips 👖
Use the 5 million to buy the property and reconstruct the road. How can they justify 5 million on that?
Truckers will hesitate due to fact it’s going to damage the semi. STUPIDITY AT ITS BEST. ANYWAY TO COST PEOPLE MONEY.
5 MILLION DOLLARS. proof liberals are the problem.
look like if you use it, that will be also the end of your truck, produce t I scrap metal, would drivers like to explore alternatives or taking chances to save their truck, gravel if better user friendly alternative and proven, also not writeoff your mean of income
Trucks need to go back to stick .and leave outomatic transmission alone .
I’m from old school of trucking » when trucks didn’t have Jake breaks or automatic transmission». Coming down grape vine slow down get it in right gear and TAKE YOUR TIME DOWN. Works Everytime 😁👍🤭
What an annoying voice she has
Or limit the weight these trucks can tow, or limit the weight of the vehicle that can access that highway. or spend 5 million. A hole with gravel must be a lot cheaper, so I’m sure the Unions faught hard against that. Tax dollars wasted again, thanks to Unions
I’d rather take my chances of maybe saving the truck at the bottom of the hill only only having burnt brakes instead of totaling the truck hitting those wires. Just use gravel it stops without totaling the truck
@Mercury 02 actually you don’t burn the brakes in the first place like a rookie. But if it did actually happen skip that ramp.
Let’s pay 5-10 grand for a tow plus the 10 grand to fix the ramp vs maybe 3-5 grand of cosmetic repair! Do some research lol gravel ramps are no the way lol
No you take the ramp and don’t risk killing people you absolute idiot lol what the absolute hell?
Put a detour around! DUH!
That much money the build that that they f****** ripoff that could have been done for half that
Two wheels lady really it ain’t no car try 9 wheels .for 5 million they could have built a road where the truck destroyed the buildings ,
Why cant this news lady just talk like a normal human
Are they just running red lights?
Do you think the truck Driver are going to want to destroy their trucks.
Destroy your truck or enjoy your 20-25 for manslaughter when you bulldoze a family after they have security footage of you ignoring the ramp
Maybe learn to drive and they won’t have to lol
thought we were gonna get to see it in action 🙁
When a driver sees those gates, he’s going to assume the runaway ramp is closed! Makes no sense!
It’s going to fail because they’re thinking the wrong way they’re thinking the issues to truckers it’s the road
or hear me out stop putting stop lights in dumb places 🤦♂️
That hill is going to be there regardless so great solution Einstein
Who talks like she does??
Here’s a DUMB IDEA, how about ticketing drivers exceeding the speed limit, maybe the speed limit is already set high, lower it. There shouldn’t be this many trucks having brake problems. Then again, they give CDL’s to just about anybody these days.
need signs stating gear to be used going down. military used to be go down hill in same gear you go up.
Sounds to me that those truck drivers need to go back through driving school. I just got my Class A CDL with tanker, HAZMAT, and Passenger endorsements, and we were trained on how to brake on steep inclines, keep the truck in a lower gear, and to always anticipate the lights to change.
That driver error pick proper gear and use your jake brake. and the new episodes damages the truck with those metal gates . use gravel or sand works better. if it ain’t broke don’t fix it
I have been there twice in my truck driving career, both time I was welcome by snow going up the hill. I am very glad that run away ramp was implemented. I recognize the danger at that intersection, and understand how needed that run away truck ramp is.
Find a gear that will hold you back use you Jake break and stay off the breaks. Years ago we chained a snow plow to the back of of trailer the driver was scared to death snow plow driver took a wild ride but got the driver safely down the hill . I grew up in St Charles I know that hill very well
where do they find these idiots and who is stupid enough to think this will work?
Lol you mean the engineers who went to college and have more money put into school than you’ve made?
Lack of experience and knowledge of the operators truck.. they’ll give anyone a license.. clearly.
That’s going to destroy the truck. Gravel pit would of been better
That will rip open fuel tanks and take oil pans off what are these people thinking
Pee gravel and 2ns sand works better with out the hazmat fuel tank, def oil antifreeze and even fire from fuel flash over. Just make a truck bypass or have the law enforcement do the job as they are paid to do traffic enforcement slow down those trucks. And they’re not thinking metal against metal stuff will be ripped apart.
Why won’t they show how it does in testing. Has it been tested or are they using truckers as lab rats and hope that it works
How bout the drivers learn to drive?
So how much damage will this new truck ramp inflict upon a truck? Old style truck ramp cost a tow bill and fine. This one is gonna total the truck. Stupid idea
They also total that gravel ramp and cost like 10-20 grand to relevel each time they don’t just tow you out idiot
The best way to stop runaway trucks would be to stop hiring idiots to drive trucks.
Of course that would mean better pay for the people that aren’t idiots, so I guess that’s out.
Except the old way was cheap to “reset” and probably didn’t tear the truck to shreds like this.
I wonder if she uses her news voice at home
What’s the difference between gravel. Is gravel not cheaper. Easier to maintain. Easier on trucks. Easier to replace or setup.. idk I’m not a trucker I’m uninformed in events like this. 5 million for what a couple truckloads of gravel can do. I don’t know.
Gravel is not easier to maintain those ramps need to be almost completely redug up and reset and are also highly susceptible to Erosion
No way in hell that cost 5million.. no one will ever use that, but they would’ve used sand
$5 million? Looks like a complicated system with maintenance requirements. How about a big ditch filled with gravel that would cost a fraction of that and barely require any maintenance?
5 million dollars to build that smh that can’t be right at all . I would completely build 2 off those for 200k at most . Some politician made them self 4.5 million dollars there easily.
It cost about $300,000 and the rest of the money went in a politician’s pocket and nobody will use it because it will total out a truck but if somebody used it it would cost $5 million to fix it so you could use it again what a hand job
5 million TAX payer dollars to replace truck driver commonsense and instead of paying attention, lets pay to help them from killing others and destroying property simply cause they cant handle a simple thing called paying attention!
How about changing the route fro trucks? This doesn’t seems to be a good idea the some of the footage was trucks the made it to the intersection with no brake issues so the problem is the downhill going into town the whole thing it makes no sense the stop before going down hill is a good idea a separate ramp to go right and another one going left only for trucks could work unfortunately they already wasted $5 million in that runaway ramp yes I said wasted a standard ramp the creates damage to trucks is a good punishment for the super truckers the don’t pay attention.
We all know the run away ramp salesman was greasing palms in little ol bear lake. We all know that system will break and rust long before it pays for itself catching 3 trucks per year avg over a gravel pit
5 million for a single use. old one you just fill back up with rocks!
Looks like they made a runaway ramp to destroy trucks.
