Flashback: Biden fall conjures up memories of media hysteria when Trump walked slowly down a ramp
It remains to be seen if Biden’s fall will receive a fraction of the attention Trump did for walking gingerly
Biden stumbles while walking up steps to Air Force One
President Biden stumbled twice and appeared to trip while going up the stairs to Air Force One on Friday.
President Biden fell three times when attempting to board Air Force One on Friday, conjuring up memories of the mainstream media hyperventilating over former President Donald Trump cautiously walking down a ramp last year.
Reporters and pundits sounded the alarm about Trump’s well-being for what they believed were signs of declining health during his appearance at a West Point commencement ceremony in June, when Trump was seen cautiously walking down a ramp from the stage.
A clip of Trump’s cautious walk shared on Twitter by left-wing journalist Aaron Rapar accumulated over 13.1 million views. The footage essentially dominated an entire news cycle and liberal pundits even used it as the impetus to question if something was wrong with Trump neurologically.
It remains to be seen if 78-year-old Biden’s triple fall will receive a fraction of the attention Trump received for walking gingerly.
«Honestly no one would care that much about an old man tripping but the NYT, CNN and others went all in on speculative coverage about Trump walking down a ramp so here we are with the media having to eat their own hostile and corrosive coverage,» journalist Mark Hemingway observed.
The New York Times ran the headline, «Trump’s Halting Walk Down Ramp Raises New Health Questions.»
«Mr. Trump — who turned 74 on Sunday, the oldest a U.S. president has been in his first term — was recorded hesitantly descending the ramp one step at a time after he delivered an address to graduating cadets at the New York-based academy on Saturday. The academy’s superintendent, Lt. Gen. Darryl A. Williams, walked alongside him. Mr. Trump sped up slightly for the final three steps, as he got to the bottom,» Times reporter Maggie Haberman wrote.
«Serious question: what is going on with him? His supporters have tried so hard to get the media to question Joe Biden’s mental and physical fitness but they so often engage in projection it seems worth inquiring,» MSNBC host Joy Reid tweeted at the time.
«The matter of a President’s health is of great importance to the American public,» Associated Press reporter Jonathan Lemire said on MSNBC, noting that Trump regularly questioned Biden’s fitness for office.
«It is absolutely harder to make the case when we see video like this where the president himself, he’s having momentarily stumbles, momentary lapses, straining for a word or whatever it might be,» Lemire continued.
CNN was particularly obsessed with Trump’s cautious walk, as CNN’s Alisyn Camerota said the president walking «very haltingly» could be a cause for concern.
«Maybe he just has a hard time going down a gently sloping ramp,» she said before asking Dr. Sanjay Gupta, «But do you see something, possibly neurological that could be throwing off his balance?»
Gupta responded that a lot of neurologists were talking about the situation. Meanwhile, CNN’s Chris Cillizza said it was an important story because Trump was 74 at the time.
«We know so little about Donald Trump’s past medical history,» Cillizza said as the liberal network’s on-screen graphic said, «Trump’s unsteady walk, arm lift raise health questions.»
CNN anchor John King said Trump looked «a little shaky» on the ramp. CNN political correspondent Abby Phillip pondered whether Trump was being «transparent» about his health based on the «latest incidents.»
Biden even got in on the act, mocking Trump on the campaign trail in a moment that will presumably come back to haunt him.
«Look at how he steps and look at how I step. Watch how I run up ramps and he stumbles down ramps. Come on,» Biden said.
Trump responded to speculation by noting that the ramp was slippery, but Haberman didn’t buy it. «There was no evidence that the ramp was slippery, and the skies were clear during the ceremony,» the Times reporter tweeted.
White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield explained that Biden was uninjured from the triple fall. Another spokesperson said it was due to the strong wind.
«I know folks have seen that President Biden slipped on his way up the stairs to AF1, but I’m happy to report that he is just fine and did not even require any attention from the medical team who travels with him,» she said. «Nothing more than a misstep on the stairs.»
Biden in December fractured his foot while chasing his dog.

Watch: Joe Biden Falls on Steps While Boarding Air Force One
President Joe Biden stumbled twice and then fell while climbing a stairway to board Air Force One Friday.
Biden made his way from Marine One across the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews and was ascending the stairs when he began to slip:

Biden stumbled on the steps twice before falling to his left knee. The president then pulled himself up and boarded the plane, which then took off for his scheduled trip to Atlanta, Georgia.
From one witness’s camera angle, Biden fell far enough to disappear from view on the tarmac stairs.
Another angle more clearly shows Biden stumbling and hitting his knee:

On Thursday, Biden raised eyebrows when he referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “President Harris” and did not correct himself.

Biden ‘doing fine’ after stumbling once, twice, thrice on steps of Air Force One
White House spokesperson blames windy weather after Biden loses his footing three times boarding presidential plane
Joe Biden stumbles on steps of Air Force One – video
Last modified on Sat 20 Mar 2021 04.37 GMT
Supporters of Joe Biden were tempting fate when they claimed he had not put a foot wrong during his first two months in office.
The US president managed to fall not once, not twice but three times on his way up a staircase to the Air Force One presidential aircraft on Friday.
A White House spokesperson blamed windy weather.
The triple stumble came as Biden, at 78 the oldest person ever elected US president, was departing for Atlanta from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
About halfway up the red carpeted stairs, Biden could be seen losing his footing before stumbling three times, eventually ending up on his left knee while still holding the railing with his right hand.
The president got back up, gave his left knee a rub and ascended the rest of the staircase before turning and saluting US marines who had flown him by helicopter to the airport from the White House.
Officials insisted there was no damage done. Karine Jean-Pierre, the deputy White House press secretary, told reporters on Air Force One: “It’s very windy. I almost fell coming up the steps myself. He is doing 100% fine.”
Asked if the president was checked by a doctor, Jean-Pierre said only: “I just – all I know is – I can tell you is he’s doing fine. He’s doing great.”
The incident recalled concerns last November when Biden fractured his foot after slipping while playing with his pet dog, a German shepherd called Major.
His notorious verbal gaffes – this week he accidentally referred to vice-president Kamala Harris as “President Harris” – have also been seized on by conservatives as evidence of age-related decline.
Donald Trump Jr, the son of the former president, tweeted sarcastically about Biden’s fall: “Pay no attention to the fact that the President of the United States is so frail that he got knocked over repeatedly by a gust of wind. Nothing at all to see here, folks!”
Trump Jr also tweeted a spoof video in which his father strikes a golf ball which flies through the air and hits Biden on the head, knocking him over. “It wasn’t the wind folks,” he added.
But Biden is hardly alone in suffering the perils of having TV cameras watch his every move. Mike Pence, the former vice-president, stumbled while climbing the stairs to Air Force Two last June.
That same month Donald Trump gingerly walked down a ramp at the US Military Academy at West Point, later explaining that he knew a fall would be exploited by watching media.
Jeffrey Wright, an actor and activist, tweeted: “I don’t care if Joe Biden trips on the Air Force One stairs stone drunk after an all-nighter, so long as he keeps pounding Covid with this vaccine rollout.”

Biden stumbles and almost falls over AGAIN while boarding Air Force One two weeks after slip-up
JOE Biden stumbled and almost fell over again while boarding Air Force One two weeks after his slip-up.
New footage shows the president, 78, tripping as he walked up the stairs to the aircraft in the rain today.
However, Biden quickly caught himself and did not drop to the floor.
This was almost the second time in two weeks that the president took a tumble on the steps.
On March 19, Biden tripped a total of three times as he made his way up the stairs to board Air Force One.
However, he quickly recovered and carried on up the stairs, giving a salute before entering the aircraft.
The White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that Biden is «doing 100 percent fine» following the fall.
«Well I think the press conference is probably the least of it,» Trump said.
«People saw a lot of things happening long-prior to the press conference — and even the trip up the stairs — up and down, three times — there are a lot of things going on, so we’ll see what happens.
«I hope he’s in good shape I hope he’s OK for the sake of the country.»
He went on to compare the media coverage of Biden’s fall, with how Trump walked down a ramp following a speech.
«But they covered that for weeks, and this guy falls down three times, he couldn’t get up, the third time he didn’t know where the hell he was.
«And it was not on the evening news, other than a couple of networks, but it wasn’t ABC, CBS, NBC, and it got almost no coverage. It’s incredible,» he said.
Biden’s campaign video mocking Trump struggling to walk down a ramp started trending on social media after the President fell on Air Force One’s stairs.
But following the embarrassing trip, his campaign footage making fun of Trump struggling to walk downstairs began trending on Twitter.
A voiceover says over a montage of the Biden nominee rushing around: «Some people are always in a hurry — they run when they could walk,
«Race up steps when others take it slow,» the male voice continues as a clip of Biden running up a ramp is followed by Trump slowly descending the West Point ramp.
The then-president defended himself by claiming the ramp was «long and steep and slippery» and blamed his footwear choice.
Late last year Biden was seen wearing his typical navy blue suit with a cast on his right foot outside The Queen theater in Delaware.
He appeared at the venue in Wilmington to formally unveil his six-person economic team, a core group that includes veterans from previous Democratic administrations and historic firsts.
Biden was forced to wear the protective boot for «several weeks» after x-rays revealed a «hairline fracture» in his foot.
Journalists assigned to Biden first revealed the injury.
«On Saturday Nov. 28, President-elect Biden slipped while playing with his dog Major, and twisted his ankle,» a pool report said.
«Out of an abundance of caution, he will be examined this afternoon by an orthopedist.»
In a statement to MSNBC, Dr Kevin O’Connor said: «Follow-up CT scan confirmed hairline (small) fractures of President-elect Biden’s lateral and intermediate cuneiform bones, which are in the mid-foot.»
After an initial examination, Biden was sent to an orthopedist for a CT scan, which revealed the fracture.
Soon after, former President Donald Trump sent Biden his well wishes on Twitter and shared an NBC clip of the Democrat leaving the clinic.
«Get well soon!» Trump said.
According to the Delaware Humane Society, the former vice president and his wife Dr Jill Biden got to know Major while fostering him.
The animal-loving couple – who also own a German shepherd called Champ, 12 – adopted Major in 2018, a few months before Biden announced his presidential run.
He was one of six puppies brought to a shelter “after being exposed to something toxic” in their previous home, according to the Washington Post.
The pooch became the first shelter dog to live at the White House when the Bidens moved in on January 20.
Major was recently in the dog house after he reportedly behaved aggressively toward White House staff.
The german shepherd had a “biting incident” with a White House security member, two sources told CNN on Monday.
The extent of the injury to the security staff was not immediately known.
But the injury was serious enough that Major and Biden’s other dog, Champ, were taken back to Wilmington, Delaware, where they will stay.
Major, 3, had shown agitated behavior on several occasions including “charging” at staff, jumping and barking, sources told CNN.
Biden’s tumble is the latest of many gaffes that eagle-eyed Americans have spotted.
During a press conference touting the Covid-19 vaccine rollout on Thursday, Biden, 78, experienced a slip of the tongue about his second-in-command.
«The hardest hit and suffered the most especially black, latino, native american, and rural communities,» he began
Biden went on to say that he believed that efficiency had to be met with «fairness» before the gaffe.
